The design of The Rescape was inspired by the majestic natural environment of the proposed site, which is nestled between lush forests and the sea. The guest rooms are constructed as simple and modern single-story buildings, allowing guests to feel the outside environment's richness. The interior design effortlessly blends warmth, color, and the region's culture, creating a refined space that respects the surrounding scenery.
What sets The Rescape apart from other resort hotels is its unique features and strengths. The resort consists of an administration building located in the center, along with 41 villa-type guest rooms, each with its own outdoor pool and terrace. The rooms are furnished with cushions and foot throws made from local indigo-dyed fabrics, as well as art made from 'Biro' (Livistona), a locally sourced treasured material. The lighting fixtures are made of traditional Ryukyu glass, showcasing the island's distinctive colors and the region's crafts.
The realization of The Rescape involved the use of local materials and collaboration with local artisans. The main materials for the interior finishings include concrete, tile, and wood, aiming to create a resort hotel with local features. Ryukyu limestone, a material peculiar to the region, and green stones from Indonesia were also incorporated into the design. Local artists handcrafted the indigo-dyed cushions and foot throws, while local ceramic works made from areca leaves are displayed as artwork. The glass pendant light fixtures were designed in collaboration with local Ryukyu glass artists, adding brilliance to the space.
The Rescape is more than just a hotel; it offers a unique experience for its guests. The hotel staff are knowledgeable about the hidden gems of the islands and act as concierges, guiding guests to explore the best the region has to offer. Marine attractions like stand-up paddling and wellness programs like beach yoga are provided for guests' pleasure.
The project to create The Rescape started in April 2016 and was completed in May 2019 on Miyako Island, Okinawa, Japan. The designers conducted extensive research on the island's traditional culture and crafts to create a design that reflects the region's characteristics. The landscape designers studied the local vegetation and created a landscape design that is familiar to the community, respecting the magnificent nature of the area.
The Rescape faced several challenges during its development. The project involved renovating six buildings, including the reception, and developing new buildings around them to operate under one hotel brand. The existing building was severely deteriorated, requiring careful examination of the renovation method. The old furniture left in the building was repaired and incorporated into the new hotel's interior, achieving a design that blends old and new elements.
The Rescape has been recognized for its outstanding design and creativity. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2021. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.
Experience the beauty of Miyako Island and immerse yourself in the unique blend of nature and culture at The Rescape. This hideaway resort hotel is a true gem that offers a memorable and enriching stay for every guest.
